Viticulture and Vinification
Negru de Drăgășani is one of the worlds rarest varietals, with only around 20 hectares planted worldwide. Developed in 1993 in the Drăgășani research station Romania, the varietal is a crossing of Negru Vârtos- an ancient Romanian local variety with a history of over 2000 years, with Saperavi the famous Georgian variety which gives colour and structure.
Estate grown grapes on our Dealul Țiganului vineyard were carefully harvested at optimum ripeness on 28 October 2017, harvested at night to preserve freshess and fruit quality. The grapes were gently destemmed and lightly crushed before a two day cold maceration at 5° C, and then warmed and fermented at 27-29° C for 2 weeks with moderate skin maceration pump overs. The wine was lightly aged in 1 year old French oak for 3 months during which time it was put through a full mallolactic fermentation, before being prepared for bottling.

Tasting Notes
Dark ruby red, full of plum and blueberry on the nose, this a medium bodied with good complexity and juicey , chewy fruit notes of blackberry, raspberry with fine tannins and a hint of vanilla spice. It’s a distinctive wine- unlike other varietals with some original fruit flavours, young but with the promise of good aging potential.

We recommend this wine with
Rich pasta dishes like Pasta ala norma, or a fun summer barbeque with Romanian ‘Mititei’.
